In the morning of April 17, Guangdong Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage held a press conference in Guangzhou with “Intergenerational Inheritance - The Past and Present of South China Historical Trail” as the theme. Long Jiayou, director of Guangdong Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage, made a keynote speech at the conference, Zhu Guoming, chief of Urban and Rural Planning Division, Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, introduced the activation and utilization of the key lines of South China Historical Trail, and the experts on protection and utilization of the ancient roads, such as Cao Jin, director of the Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute, Chen Xiong, vice president of Architectural Design and Research Institute of Guangdong Province, Zhuang Weiguang, director of Tourism Academy, Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, Lu Qi, professor of School of Architecture, South China University of Technology, etc. answered questions for reporters on the scene.
Firstly, with detailed documentary records, archaeological discoveries and typical cases, director Long Jiayou elaborated and interpreted the intergenerational inheritance context of the formation, emergence, development, decline, reappearance and rebirth of South China Historical Trail from the pre Qin Dynasty, the Qin and Han Dynasties, the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the present, stressed that South China Historical Trail protection and utilization should adhere to the correct concept of protection, summed up the innovative experience and remarkable achievements in promoting regional economic development and social progress after the implementation of the work for two years, and explained the profound historical significance and great practical use of the protection and utilization of South China Historical Trail. He especially pointed out to enjoy the beauty of the mountains and rivers of South China along the trail, provide the public with high quality ecological products, let the teenagers experience the fun of outdoor activities and feel the way of green life, and reflect the social governance concepts of co construction, co governance and co ownership.
Director Long Jiayou emphatically introduced the existing situation and the new discoveries of South China Historical Trail, and the moving stories of the units and individuals contributing to its protection and utilization. According to incomplete statistics, there are 233 ancient roads in Guangdong, of which 135 are newly discovered. The existing ancient roads are 710.44 kilometers long, of which there are 32 of the Qin and Han Dynasties, with a total length of 139.94 kilometers, 7 of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, with a total length of 30.204 kilometers long, 7 of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, with a total length of 5.329 kilometers long, and 187 of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with a total length of 534.967 kilometers long. And there are 906 cultural relics and historic sites along, including 430 new discoveries, such as ancient roads ontology, ancient pavilions, ancient bridges, ancient customs, finger stones, ancient wharves, inscriptions, slogans, ancient ruins, base sites of ancient buildings, ancient tombs and ancient villages, etc.
Finally, director Long Jiayou stated that South China Historical Trail was a large linear cultural heritage across time and space, preserving cultural relics and intangible cultural heritage of various historical periods, bearing the profound cultural heritage of the various historical times of South China, and reflecting the unique and distinctive regional nature, the diversity of mutual exchange and integration, and the tolerance and inclusiveness of the South China culture, it not only belonged to today, but also to the future. According to the introduction of the person in charge of Urban and Rural Planning Division of Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Chinese Committee for the International Council on Monuments and Sites recently conducted a field investigation and study on South China Historical Trail. They consider that it can truly and credibly reflect the historical facts of political, economic and cultural exchanges between south of the Five Ridges and other regions for more than two thousand years, which can be confirmed with many historical documents; the protection and utilization of South China Historical Trail is based on the profound understanding of the ancient roads. It is located at a high point, and the idea is fresh. With the creative top stratagem design, the overall situation is commanded and the resources of the parties are integrated. It has made a useful exploration and demonstration especially for heritage to promote sustainable economic and social development; in the way of working, it is effective to integrate the multisectoral and multi-level governments, and establishes a set of protection management mechanism with high efficiency, clear duty, clear responsibility and unified integration. It has made an enlightening and reference practice for exploring the road of cultural heritage protection and utilization in line with the national conditions of China; in the process of carrying out the work, through a large number of brand activities, it awakens the memory of the public and community to the common history, mobilizes the enthusiasm of extensive participation and realizes the social value of the heritage. In the province, a strong “ancient road heat”, “traditional culture heat” and “historical and cultural heat” are formed, which really make the heritage “alive”, promote the cultural consciousness and firm the confidence in culture; this work is a valuable exploration of the practice path of the national heritage line.
